Welcome to the SCC Volunteer Team!
We’re thrilled to have you as part of the San Carlos Charter volunteer community. This handbook is designed to help you feel informed, supported, and confident in your role. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to know about volunteering at SCC — from guidelines and expectations to safety procedures and helpful tips.
Volunteers like you are at the heart of what makes SCC special. Your time, energy, and care help create a safe, enriching, and inclusive environment for our learners. Thank you for choosing to be part of our mission and for helping us build a stronger school community — one act of service at a time.

In accordance with California state law, all school volunteers who have frequent or prolonged contact with learners must complete a Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment. This quick screening helps ensure the health and safety of our entire school community.
The assessment takes just a few minutes and must be completed by a licensed healthcare provider. If risk factors are identified, a TB test may be required. SCC offers on-site assessments at the start of the school year for your convenience — we highly encourage early completion, even if you're still finalizing your volunteer plans.

To ensure a safe and secure environment for all learners, San Carlos Charter requires fingerprinting and a background check for volunteers who will have unsupervised access to students or participate in overnight trips and certain school activities.
This is a one-time clearance process through the California Department of Justice (DOJ), and results are confidentially shared with SCC. Once cleared, your status remains valid for the duration of your time at the school — no need to repeat the process unless there's a break in service.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe community for all!

Your safety is important to us. As part of the volunteer application process, San Carlos Charter requires all volunteers to complete an Emergency Medical Care Agreement. This form allows SCC staff or emergency personnel to provide or seek appropriate medical treatment on your behalf in the event of an accident or medical emergency while volunteering.
By signing this agreement, you acknowledge and accept the inherent risks of volunteer activities and authorize emergency care if needed. While we hope it's never necessary, this precaution helps us respond quickly and effectively in urgent situations.

As a volunteer at San Carlos Charter, you may have access to sensitive information about students, families, and staff. To protect the privacy and rights of our community, all volunteers are required to review and sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.
This agreement ensures that any personal, academic, or health-related information you encounter while volunteering remains confidential and is not shared outside of SCC. Respecting this confidentiality builds trust and upholds our commitment to a safe and respectful environment for all.

Before a volunteer application can be fully approved, all applicants must review and sign the following agreements:
Signature and Acknowledgement of the Volunteer Handbook
Volunteer Guidelines Agreement
Volunteer Confidentiality Agreement
Volunteer Participation and Waiver Release
These agreements help ensure a safe, respectful, and well-supported environment for all members of our school community. Thank you for taking the time to complete these important steps.
